We were having a friendly Sunday barbeque last weekend and a friend of my son's was telling me about this relatively new thing that people do: Geocaching. Geocaching is like the treasure hunts that we used to have when we were kids, only this time it’s on a global scale. Geocachers are equipped with a GPS system and the co-ordinates for a particular geocache is downloaded from the internet on to your GPS system. Then you simply go find it.
A geocache is placed within a waterproof container and consists of a log book, pen or pencil and a few trinkets or “treasures” for the geocachers to find. The treasures are generally not extremely valuable items just some stuff like unusual coins, CD’s, toys, etc. When you find a cache, you usually take something from it and replace it with something of the same value or higher. This is the basic gist of the game. There is an official website http://www.geocaching.com which provides users with registration, coordinates of existing caches and other useful details like how and where to buy a GPS system.

People can also hide a geocache and then upload the coordinates to the website so that other users can come find it. Although at first I wondered what the point of all this is because having the coordinates of a geocache would probably defeat the purpose and the fun of the whole “treasure hunt”. But when I read further I realized that these geocaches aren’t stashed in urban surroundings. In fact they are stashed away in places that are quite hard to reach. Also, since this is a global game, you get to go places and see places that you’ve never been to. That’s when I realized it, the whole point is for people to find places that they’ve never seen or known to exist.
I’ve been doing some serious thinking and I probably will register on the website and get started. There are so many places to see and things to do. We keep finding out so many things that we never knew to have existed on a daily basis, even after sixty long years of trotting this planet. The only hitch is, am I too old to get to some of these places? I guess we’ll find out soon…
