I just saw this article (http://www.aarpmagazine.org/health/big_idea_long-distance_living.html) on the AARP magazine website.

The article talks about a biologist working in aging research who sees aging as a disease that kills thousands of people a day. He thinks human beings can live past 100, even up to 1000 years. The life I’ve lived on earth so far has been an exciting ride with its ups and downs, sad moments and happy moments. And I couldn’t be happier being retired at my age. But if I were to live to 200 I would still be working. My life would be prolonged by about 120 years or so, which would probably mean that I would have more kids.

What would happen if a fix were introduced to the so called disease of aging? People would certainly live longer, produce more children and most probably run out of space to live on earth. It would certainly have a profound effect on the environment and the economy. Earth already seems to be overpopulated. There are lots of people who don’t have jobs and don’t have homes. When I retired at 61 a position opened and was assumed by one of my subordinates. Down the company hierarchy, someone new got hired because I retired. But if I were to live to 200 I would still be working there and that person who got hired would not be working for my former company. If my wife and I don’t die there won’t be a house on the market for someone to buy. If everyone lived to 200 the people of my generation would hold their jobs, houses and everything else for the next 70 to 100 years. People of the next generation would have more kids and they would have no jobs or houses to live in. Traffic would be insane because in another 50 years people of my generation would still be in their cars. As much fun as it sounds to live on forever, in my opinion it seems of little value. It would cause more chaos than there already is. People’s lives would become even more routine and mundane. There’ll be no point in gaining another 100 years. All that money is better spent on research for children’s diseases, AIDS, cancer and the like. But that’s just my opinion.

200 years with all this bickering? No thank you!

Grace, I already have a life. And I don't need 200 years to make it meaningful.

Sam, Tailser, maybe each of you needs to get a life. If you had one, I think your death wish might get weaker.

Right now I've got energy - don't think that'll be the case in a few decades. It's all about quality of life. Also, read this: http://www.plastic.com/article.html;sid=06/09/22/09182033 Says pretty much the same thing as me.

If I live to 200 I could watch my grandchildren grow up. But on the other hand, I'm looking forward to reuniting with my wife if there is an 'other side.' I'm not sure I want to wait that long to find out.

Tailser-since when was wanting to live long being greedy? The longer we live, the more chance we have to make the world a better place. I agree with Grace-I would love to see 200!

I agree with Sam. The money would be much better spent on research for children's diseases. Let's not get greedy by asking for another 100 years for ourselves. Enjoy what we have, and then hopefully leave a little something nice behind for the children's future.

Sam - I think you've got it wrong. We've already increased our lifespan almost double in the past couple of centuries, and we adjusted gradually to the change. Doubling it again would just mean changing the way we live in the world. I, for one, would love to see 200.
